Meet the face behind our Employee Engagement team: Luke Humphries

Coal LSL wouldn’t be what it is today without our dedicated team who work behind the scenes to make things happen. We recently launched our staff spotlight series to showcase our incredible staff and the work they do.

In this edition, we’re excited to introduce our Employee Engagement Lead - Luke Humphries. Luke and the Employee Engagement team play a key role in driving engagement activities with employees and their representatives in the coal mining industry.

Luke Humphries

How long have you worked for Coal LSL and what is your current role?

I’ve worked at Coal LSL for over six and a half years. I spent my first five years in the Service Team (now the Scheme Enquiry team), before moving into the Employee Engagement team.

Describe your team and their responsibilities?

I lead the Employee Engagement team, and our main purpose is to facilitate awareness and education of the Scheme to employee focused stakeholders. We connect with many stakeholders including industry employees, employee representatives and unions. We’re a passionate and friendly team, who love supporting and meeting with our stakeholders.

Is there anything coming up that you and the team are excited about?

We have a few exciting things coming up. We’re working with the Employer Engagement team where we will have the opportunity to connect with employees and their families on Yarrabee Coal mine sites.

Our third Employee Connect session is coming up in October. These sessions are a great opportunity for us to connect with employee representatives about the Scheme, you can read all about our last session here.

Our team will be attending multiple events this year. These events are always valuable because they provide us with insights that we can then bring back to the wider organisation.

The Employee Engagement team has seen a growth in engagement activities in the last year, and we are really excited to see how this can continue to evolve.

How can employees best contact you and the team?

The best way to contact the Employee Engagement team is to email us at employeeconnect@coallsl.com.au. Our team is always looking for more opportunities to engage with employees, so don’t hesitate to reach out to us at any time.

If you see our friendly team at an employee event, be sure to drop by and say hello – the team would love to chat with you about all things long service leave.

What are some of the highlights of your career at Coal LSL?

Working at Coal LSL has been the most rewarding experience of my career so far. I really love the people we work with and the meaningful work we do as an organisation. In my current role as Employee Engagement Lead, I have had the opportunity to start thinking more strategically about engagement activities. I particularly enjoy working with a variety of stakeholders and having the opportunity to enhance my skills.

Are there any projects or accomplishments you are particularly proud of at CLSL?

When the team is out on the road, we often hear really positive things about employee experiences with Coal LSL over the years. I feel proud to be able to bring to life an experience that allows employees in the industry to be heard.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part would be working with brilliant people, both internally and externally with our employee stakeholders.

We often refer to our employee stakeholders as ‘salt of the earth’ type of people who love sharing stories, experiences and are passionate about the work they do. They often love to share with us how having long service leave has enriched their lives, as it’s not a benefit everyone has access to. I feel extremely lucky and grateful for the opportunity to hear these stories and share them with the wider team at Coal LSL.

What was your first ever job?

My first job was at a local discount store, where I would work after school. I still remember the exact day I started - 10/07/2000.
