Conversations at HSEC 2026 reinforce the value of long service leave

Earlier this month, members of Coal LSL’s Regulatory and Education and Engagement teams attended the NSW Mining Health, Safety, Environment & Community (HSEC) Conference in the Hunter Valley.

Attending events such as HSEC enable Coal LSL to explain the benefits of the Scheme. They also allow us to hear directly from employees, employers and industry representatives about their experiences and opportunities to improve the work we do.

Building on our involvement at HSEC in 2025, we again hosted the Coal LSL Holiday Hub. The Hub provided opportunities for attendees to ask questions, share their experiences and access practical information about the Scheme.

These conversations reinforced the value employees place on portable long service leave. Many spoke about the opportunity to rest, recharge and spend time with family. Employers also recognised the broader benefits to the black coal mining industry, including supporting employee wellbeing, retention and workforce sustainability.

Over two days, the team answered questions about long service leave entitlements, employer obligations, recent legislative changes and the support available through Coal LSL’s dedicated engagement teams.

"Every conversation helped answer questions, build confidence in the Scheme and provide insights that help Coal LSL better support the industry," said Brett Murray, Employer Engagement Liaison at Coal LSL.

These events highlight the value of engaging directly with stakeholders to better understand industry needs and priorities. Discussions also confirmed the importance of access to ongoing education and the need for clear information about long service leave entitlements, employer obligations and how the Scheme works.
