Building connections at Moranbah’s May Day

Coal LSL’s Employee Engagement team support employees and representative bodies across the black coal industry by meeting people where they are so they can access clear, practical information about their long service leave (LSL).

This month, Coal LSL joined hundreds of local families at the 2026 May Day Festival in Moranbah. This community was shaped by coal mining and is one of Queensland’s youngest towns. May Day provided a valuable opportunity to connect with employees from across Moranbah and the wider Bowen Basin, an area that supports a large mining workforce.

Throughout the day, our team spoke with more than 300 employees. They checked LSL balances, explained how the Scheme works, and helped people understand how they can access the entitlements they’ve earned. Our light-hearted competition invited attendees to guess the number of lollies in a toy dump truck. This encouraged conversations and engagement in a relaxed, family-friendly setting. Luke Humphries, Employee Engagement Lead, said events like May Day are essential for building meaningful connections with industry employees.

“These events are pivotal in connecting with employees face to face,” Luke said.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to educate people about the Scheme and hear firsthand how having access to one of the most generous portable long service leave schemes has made a positive difference in their lives.”

May Day is more than a celebration. It’s a reminder of why Coal LSL exists. By attending industry events, like May Day, Coal LSL can engage directly with employees and help them understand and access their long service leave entitlements.

Coal LSL thanks the Moranbah community for the warm welcome and looks forward to continuing these conversations across the industry.
